Definition of Closure

Definition of Closure

A set is closed with respect to a given operation (such as multiplication) when applying that operation to members of the set gives you another member of the set.

A set is not closed if applying the operation to just one pair of members of the set gives you an answer that is not a member of the set.

The closure of a set under an operation is formed by adding in all the results of applying the operation to members of the set, then all the results of applying the operation to the results of the operation on members of the set, and so on. For example, the closure of the integers under division is the rational numbers.
