Definition of Capacity

The capacity of a container is the amount of a substance that it can hold.

Capacities are usually measured in units of volume such as millilitres (mL) or litres (L). Your American friends, and your grandparents might measure volumes using the Imperial measurements of pints and gallons.

For example, the measuring jug in the picture has a capacity of 1 L.

The capacity of a person or thing is their ability to perform a task.
