Definition of Common Factor

Factors are numbers that you multiply together to give another number. Every number has \(1\) as a factor.

When you find the factors (the numbers that multiply together to give the numbers) of two or more numbers, each number will have at least \(1\) as a factor. The factors that each number has in common are called the common factors of the numbers.

For example, the factors of \(18\) and \(27\) are given by:

The factors of \(18\) are: \(1,2,3,6,9\) and \(18\).
The factors of \(27\) are: \(1,3,9\) and \(27\).

Some of these factors are common to both numbers. The common factors of \(18\) and \(27\) are \(1,3\) and \(9\).
