Cosecant

Definition of Cosecant

Cosecant is one of the trigonometric ratios. It is the reciprocal of the sine of the angle.

You can find the cosecant of an angle in a right angled triangle as follows:

Divide the length of the hypotenuse of the triangle by the length of its side that is opposite the angle.

We use \(\csc \theta\) as short hand for the cosecant of the angle \(\theta\).

So, the formula is:

\( \csc\theta = \dfrac{\text{hypotenuse}}{\text{opposite}}.\)
