Definition of System of Equations

A system of equations is a collection of equations involving the same variables.

For example,

\( \begin{align} x + y &= 5\\ x - y &= 6 \end{align} \)
is a system of equations.

Systems of equations may have no solutions, one solution or an infinite number of solutions. The same solution has to work for every equation in the system.

For example, the system of equations represented by the lines in the picture has just one solution, which is the point where the two lines cross each other.
