Definition of Simplest Form (Fractions)

The simplest form of a fraction is a form in which the top and bottom have no common factors.

They cannot be made any smaller without turning them into numbers with fractional parts.

For example, the simplest form of \(\dfrac{4}{16}\) is \(\dfrac{1}{4}\), and the simplest form of \(\dfrac{25}{35}\) is \(\dfrac{5}{7}\).

To simplify a fraction in one step, you divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor (the largest number that divides into both numbers evenly).
