Definition of Scientific Notation

Scientific notation provides a way of writing very large or very small numbers in a format that is easier to read.

In Scientific Notation, each number has two parts:

  • The digits of the number. The decimal point is placed after the first digit.
  • Multiplication by a power of \(10\). The power of \(10\) which returns the expression of the digits of the number found above into their original positions is chosen.

For example, \(3,560,000\) is written in Scientific Notation as \(3.56 \times 10^{6}\) as we need to move the decimal point six places to the right in order to convert \(3.56\) back to its original form.
