Definition of Root

A Root is a value for which a function is equal to zero.

You can see roots on the graphs of functions. They are the places where the function crosses the \(x\)-axis.

In the picture, you can see that the function \(y = x^2 - 1\) has roots (or zeroes) at \(x = 1\) and \(x = -1\).

We sometimes also use the word "root" as a shortened form of "square root". For example, if someone says "root 3", they mean \(\sqrt{3}\).
