Definition of Ruler

A Ruler is a tool that you can use to measure distances and rule straight lines.

Your teacher might tell you that it is more correct to call a ruler a "rule".

The picture shows a ruler marked in centimetres. Each of the smaller divisions between the numbers corresponds to \(1 \text{ mm}\). There are \(10\) divisions of each centimetre, because there are \(10\) millimetres in one centimetre.

I just noticed that the numbers on this ruler are out of order. See if you can spot the mistake. The ruler should show all the numbers from \(1\) up to \(30\) in order.

Many rulers have markings in inches and centimetres.
