Definition of Radix

The radix is equal to the number of digits used to form numerals in a given number system.

For example,

  • Since the decimal number system makes numbers out of the ten digits \(\{0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9\}\), its radix is \(10\).
  • Since the binary number system makes numbers out of the two digits \(\{0,1\}\), its radix is \(2\).
  • Since the ternary number system makes numbers out of the ten digits \(\{0,1,2\}\), its radix is \(3\).
  • The hexadecimal number system makes numerals out of sixteen digits, so its radix is \(16\).

The term, radix can also refer to the number that is raised to a power.

For example, the radix of \(9^5\) is \(9\).

Description

The aim of this dictionary is to provide definitions to common mathematical terms. Students learn a new math skill every week at school, sometimes just before they start a new skill, if they want to look at what a specific term means, this is where this dictionary will become handy and a go-to guide for a student.
