Definition of Distance
A distance is a length. It measures how far something has moved or travelled in space.
Unlike displacement, distance is a scalar quantity, so it only has a magnitude (size).
In the picture, the distance travelled by Gus the snail during his training for the world land-speed record would be measured around the path, not across the bottom.
