Tangent (Function)

Definition of Tangent (Function)

Tangent is one of the trigonometric ratios. You can find the tangent of an angle in a right-angled triangle as follows:

Divide the length of the side opposite the angle by the length of the side adjacent to the angle.

We use \(\tan \theta\) as shorthand for the tangent of the angle \(\theta\).

So, the formula is:

\( \tan\theta = \dfrac{\text{opposite}}{\text{adjacent}}.\)
