Definition of Formula

A formula is an equation that can be used to calculate the value of one variable, based on the values of other variables.

For example, the volume of the pyramid in the picture is given by the formula:

\( V = \dfrac{1}{3}b^2 h\)
This formula involves the following variables:
  • \(V\) represents the volume.
  • \(b\) is the side-length of the base of the pyramid.
  • \(h\) is the height of the pyramid.

When \(b = 3\) and \(h = 5\), the volume is \(V = \dfrac{1}{3} \times 3^2 \times 5 = 15 \text{ units}^3.\)
