Definition of Factor Tree

A factor tree is a tree diagram that helps you to find the factors of a number.

You start out with a pair of factors of the number, and then find pairs of factors of each of those factors.

You stop when you reach a prime number.

The values at the leaves of a factor tree (i.e. the very bottom) are all the prime factors of the original number.

For example, using the factor tree on the left gives the prime factorisation \(54 = 2 \times 3 \times 3 \times 3\).
