Definition of Alternate Interior Angles | SubjectCoach

When two lines are crossed by a transversal (a third line that crosses both lines), a number of different pairs of angles are formed.

The angles formed by the transversal and the lines that are on opposite sides of the transversal, but in between the two lines are called alternate interior angles.

Alternate interior angles are the inside angles of the "Z" shape that is formed from the two lines and the transversal.

Angles \(a\) and \(b\) in the diagram on the left are alternate interior angles.

Note: When the two lines crossed by the transversal are parallel, the alternate interior angles are equal. Sometimes we refer to alternate interior angles simply as "alternate angles"
