Definition of variable | Subjectcoach

A symbol that takes the place of an unknown number in an equation.

We usually use letters like \(x\) or \(y\) for variables, but you could equally well use a picture of an elephant or an anteater.

For example, in the equation \(y = 7x + 8\), the variables are \(x\) and \(y\).
