Definition of Engineering Notation

Definition of Engineering Notation

Engineering notation is a bit like scientific notation, except that the only powers of \(10\) allowed are those that are multiples of \(3\) (\(\dots, 10^{-6},10^{-3},10^0,10^3,10^6,10^9,10^{12},\dots\)).

For example,

  • 2,756 is written in engineering notation as \(2.756 \times 10^3\).
  • 25,829 is written in engineering notation as \(25.829 \times 10^3\).
  • 266,789 is written in engineering notation as \(266.789 \times 10^3\).
  • 1,234,593 is written in engineering notation as \(1.234593 \times 10^6\).
