# Definition of Negative

Negative numbers are numbers that are less than zero. If you visit Perisher Valley or Falls Creek, you might experience temperatures that are reported as negative numbers.

We write negative numbers using a minus sign in front. For example, $-32$ is "negative thirty-two", although we tend to say it as "minus thirty-two".

Mathematicians will often use the abbreviation "-ve" to mean "negative".

The positive numbers are the numbers that are greater than zero. Zero is considered to be neither positive nor negative.
