Getting Started with SEI CMMI

SEI CMMI Models Disciplines

Organizations select the levels of knowledge in CMMI.

Four levels of knowledge for selecting a CMMI model:

  • Systems engineering
  • Software engineering
  • Integrated product and process development
  • Supplier sourcing

Systems Engineering (SW):

  • Total system  development
  • Transforming customers’ needs into solutions
  • Providing support for product solutions.

Models of systems engineering:

  • Process management
  • Project management
  • Support
  • Engineering process areas
  • software systems covers the development:
    • Focus on disciplined, systematic and quantifiable approaches to development
    • Operation
    • software maintenance
  • Models of software engineering:
    • Process management
    • Project management
    • Support
    • Engineering process areas
  • Helps in satisfying customer needs in systematic approach.
  • Models of IPPD:
  • Process management
  • Project management
  • Support
  • Engineering process areas
  • When project efforts become more complex use suppliers
  • Models of supplier sourcing:
    • Process management
    • Project management
    • Support
    • Engineering process areas

Software Engineering (SE):

  • software systems covers the development:
    • Focus on disciplined, systematic and quantifiable approaches to development
    • Operation
    • software maintenance
  • Models of software engineering:
    • Process management
    • Project management
    • Support
    • Engineering process areas

Integrated Product and Process Development (IPPD):

  • Helps in satisfying customer needs in systematic approach.
  • Models of IPPD:
  • Process management
  • Project management
  • Support
  • Engineering process areas

Supplier Sourcing:

  • When project efforts become more complex use suppliers
  • Models of supplier sourcing:
    • Process management
    • Project management
    • Support
    • Engineering process areas

CMMI Discipline Selection:

Selecting a discipline may be a tough step and depends on what a organization desires to enhance.

  • If you are planning to improve systems engineering processes, like Configuration Management, measuring and Analysis, Process of Organization Focus, Project observation and management, method and products Quality Assurance, Risk Management, provider Agreement Management etc., then you should to choose Systems engineering (SE) discipline.
  • Select IPPD if you are improving process and product development like integrated teams and organization environment.
  • Select Supplier Sourcing (SS) if you are improving process selection like Integrated Supplier Management.
