About this worksheet
Suits Year 9 and upArithmetic in base sixteen, the computer s favourite dialect: digits run 0 to 9 then A to F (ten to fifteen), and columns carry at sixteen instead of ten.
The pleasant surprise: column addition works exactly as learned in primary school, only the carry point moves. 9 + 5 in hex is E, no carry; A + 8 is 12 in hex, carry one.

Common questions
Why does computing use base 16 at all?
It is shorthand for binary: one hex digit packs exactly four binary bits, so FF is eight bits (255) in two characters. Every colour code like #FF6600 is three hex pairs, red, green, blue.
A method for hex sums while learning?
Via decimal as scaffolding: A + 8 is 10 + 8 = 18, and 18 is one sixteen with 2 left over, so 12 in hex. With practice the detour shortens and the hex facts stand alone.
