An equation is balanced when both sides have the same value.

This term comes from the idea of an old-fashioned balance scale. The objects to be weighed would be placed in the pan on one side, and known weights would be placed in the pan on the other side. When the arm holding the two pans was horizontal, the objects in each pan had the same mass.

Description
