Long Division with Decimals
Long division with decimals extends the traditional division algorithm to produce decimal results. When the dividend is smaller than the divisor, or when there's a remainder, we continue dividing by adding decimal places.
Steps:
- Perform regular long division until you get a remainder
- Add a decimal point to the quotient
- Add a zero to the remainder (multiply by 10)
- Continue dividing as normal
- Repeat steps 3-4 until you reach the desired decimal precision or the remainder becomes zero
Example: 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75
- 4 goes into 7 once (1 × 4 = 4), remainder 3
- Add decimal point: quotient is now "1."
- Add zero to remainder: 30
- 4 goes into 30 seven times (7 × 4 = 28), remainder 2
- Quotient is now "1.7"
- Add zero to remainder: 20
- 4 goes into 20 five times (5 × 4 = 20), remainder 0
- Final answer: 1.75
Rounding: When working with decimals, it's often necessary to round to a specific number of decimal places for practical purposes.
