The Quiet Bus Stop

The council counted students at the bus stop for three wet mornings and found that the shelter filled before the first bus arrived. The easy complaint was that students were crowding the footpath because they were careless. The notes, however, showed that most students were stepping out only when passing cyclists squeezed through the narrow gap.

A proposed solution was to paint a waiting line, but the transport officer rejected that as too neat. Paint would guide behaviour on dry days, yet it would not make the shelter wider or the cycle path safer. The stronger recommendation was a shorter bench and a marked bicycle bypass behind the shelter.

The report does not blame one group. It uses small observations to show that design can create the behaviour adults later criticise.
