I am a 28 year old chemistry PhD student who offers tuition in HSC chemistry and 1st year university chemistry. I am very familiar with both the NSW Board of Studies HSC syllabus and the University of Newcastle course requirements for all first year chemistry subjects and second year organic chemistry. Sitting in a classroom or lecture theatre environment can often make it difficult to absorb information for several reasons: distractions, speed of the lecture, explanation method of the teacher/lecturer. In my experience with tutoring, I have often had success with students by first gauging their understanding of particular concepts then explaining these in another direction that the student may more easily relate to. For example, moles calculations can be more readily understood by picturing molecules in a confined space colliding and forming new bonds, rather than solely writing equations and numbers on a page, which often makes it difficult to relate the calculation to what is happening in the beaker. My tutoring sessions are broken up into several core focuses depending on the student’s needs at the time, including: explanation of key concepts covered in class, working through problems and example questions, revising past examination papers (which I can bring to the tutoring session), teaching effective revision methods before exams. I recently had success with a 1st year student, who had no chemistry background, obtaining her first Distinction grade in her final exam.
