Definition of weight | SubjectCoach

The weight of something is how heavy it is. Technically, weight is the downward force on an object due to gravity. Because the force of gravity is much smaller on the moon, you would weigh a lot less on the moon than you do on Earth. Jupiter has a greater force of gravity, so you would weigh a lot more on Jupiter than on the Earth.

Because weight is really a force, we should measure it in Newtons. However, we usually use the units of mass for weight. In Australia, we use the metric units of grams, kilograms and tonnes. Your grandparents might use the Imperial units of ounces, pounds, stone and tons to measure weight. Americans use Imperial units too.
