# Definition of km/h

km/h is an abbreviation of "kilometres per hour". It is a metric unit used to measure speed.

In Australia, we measure speeds and state speed limits in km/h. The sign shows a speed limit of 40 km/h. This speed limit is commonly used around schools and other areas with a large amount of pedestrian activity. Other common speed limits include 100 km/h on highways, 110 km/h on freeways, and 60 km/h in built-up areas.

If your grandparents or an American friend start talking about speeds in miles per hour, you'll be able to translate these into km/h if you remember that 1 mile per hour is approximately 1.6 km/h.
