Common questions
Why do tallies bundle in fives?
So big counts can be read at a glance: three gates and two spares is 17 without counting every stroke. It is how scores have been kept since long before spreadsheets.
What should my child count, strokes or gates?
Gates first, five, ten, fifteen, then the leftover strokes. Counting every stroke works but misses the whole point of the bundles.
